Cubism

Image
David Hockney He is an English printer, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer and most importantly a photographer. Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th Century. One of Hockney's more famous picture is My Mother. The photo is of David's mum in various different angles that have been rearranged to show different sides of her face. This image has a sentimental value to him as it his mother.  The photos colour helps to convey emotion as there is the pink in here cheeks which shows life. The lines that are represented are the outline of each photograph which help to block each picture and helps to form the stylistic features of cubism. The contrast is not too extreme as there is a difference between the light but at a reasonable level. All the images used to create the one photo are all different shapes where some are used to highlight different features of her face.  My attempt at a cubism style photo. what is cubism? Surrealism

Image
Surrealism What is surrealism? It is an art movement that came from the 20th Century to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, like the irrational juxtaposition of images. It was a cultural movement which developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War 1. The movement is best known for its visual artworks and writings and the juxtaposition of distant realities to activate the unconscious mind through the imagery. He is also well known as an individual artist synonymous with surrealism. This is what Dali is most famous for and depicting this theme through his paintings and other art works. Most of his art shows a dream like sequence which he often draws hallucinatory characters.  Another surrealist is René Magritte who was a Belgian artist, who became well known for creating a number of witty an...

Realism

Image
HONORÉ-VICTORIN DAUMIER He was one of the leading figures of the realism art movement in France. He is best known for his caricatures of the 19th century French political and social life. Amongst his realist works he highlights the socio-economic distinctions in the newly modernized France.  Rue Transnonain  The Rue Transnonain is one of Daumier's most famous pieces of work. The social context of this painting is in response to political unrest, presents a dramatic imaging of massacre of innocents. Whilst the piece draws from current events, there is an unnerving sense of silence and anger not found in his other works. It reveals Daumier's emotional rage. Instead of the humor that permeates most of his work, the rage in the Rue Transnonain effectively conveys senseless tragedy and outrage. The picture shown above shows a man dressed in only a night shirt slumped on the ground, after being caught in the crossfire of the massacre and is surrounded by overturned fu...
